5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!   July 5, 2008
Have used Norton for 5yrs with no problems but this years renewal came around and couldnt access Norton web pages from AOL to download renewal, so what to do? Checked out prices for whole new package and Amazon the best by far. Received in couple of days but then dredding the actual update. Would AOL work afterwards and how many days would it take to get back online, last year with download renewal took 3 days!!! Well have just done the whole process including writing this review in 45 mins, WOW!!! All working brilliantly!! Did download uninstall tool from Norton first as recommended by other reviewers. Would advise any AOL users to go for it.

4 out of 5 stars wow   July 2, 2008

wow, never seen any software create such an impact, it must be worth 4/5 stars just for that. The amount of reviews and mixed feeling is incredible. Is this software really that good or really that bad. I have use older Nortons and like most folks not that impressed.
I have a new laptop and this is preconfigured as part of the package for 60days. I'll give it a run, seem's ok so far but early days......then we'll see and maybe go back to my trusted zonealarm, I haven't noticed any significant slow down so it looks ok and I would hope with it being a brand now laptop of decent speck it 'orta' be fine. Mind you we will be due the next crop of software in a few month's. Think the best thing is to do a trial first and make your mind up, these reviews are just too conflicting, it's like a battle, the fore's and against's!!! Nightmare really to decide on this score so use it and abuse it!! good luck

5 out of 5 stars Tuned up at last   June 28, 2008

I've been using Norton Internet security products for many years with slowly diminishing results. I'd had so many problems that Last year I bought the new and, by symantec, lauded 360. Big mistake. It took me several days to get it to work with the help of 'customer services' and at a significant cost. They eventually took remote control of my computer and as I watched cleaned up my hard disc. As they were doing this I noticed that they used a 'removal tool' (the first I had heard of this) to strip out norton programmes which, it appeared to me, were years old. They then reinstalled 360 and now, at last it worked. However, it made my computer run (if that is not an abuse of 'run') so slowly that for the last year computing has been a nightmare. Even though I'm a silver surfer even I was getting fed up taking naps whilst I awaited programme launches. When I contacted Symantec their only offering was that I may have a dirty computer i.e. full of dust. I was taken in by this and duly cleaned out the case. Surprisingly there was little dust but not surprisingly the speed of the computer was not affected.
So I have just bought and installed Internet Security 2008. Before I did so, though, I downloaded the Norton removal tool and cleaned out all the Norton files. Installation then went through perfectly and to my delight my computer is now racing through programme launch. It seems to be back to its original speed. I am very pleased - though will possibly miss some of my naps.
In case you wonder why I stuck with Norton - well I discussed the problem with some of my younger friends and family, some of whom claim expertise, and they reckon that all the opposition suffer from the same types of problem and that Norton was still just ahead of them.
It seems. at least to me, that if you use the removal tool before installing new products that they then run as described on the box

2 out of 5 stars Still a work in progress   June 10, 2008

I've used Norton for 3 years, but have had to call it a day. It appears to run without problems, not one Virus or Trojan detected etc. But this in itself is the problem, it seems to have major issues in detecting them, whereas free AVG deals with them with no problems. I recommend that you don't use Norton without using the AVG as backup, otherwise you could be leaving yourself open to attack.

Secondly is the problem with Norton hogging system resources and slowing the PC down to a crawl. I've previously tried most of the tricks to try and speed up my PC but only got a slight increase, but soon as I uninstalled Norton I had an immediate 100% or more increase in speed. (I had been wasting my money on high speed broadband because of my dog slow PC). Norton has been improving this problem over the years, but it still has a way to go. I've now installed Kaspersky and it appears to be a 5 star product up to press. No slowing down of PC during normal running. Even during full system scans there is only a slight slowing down when surfing. I wouldn't have even attempted this with Norton.

If you've got Norton already installed you can go to the synamtec web site and get the removal tool. Apparently the normal uninstall sometimes doesn't fully work

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Customer Service Possible.   May 18, 2008

My PC picked up a virus (Norton missed it) and Norton tech. support convinced me to spend 69 for them to clean the PC. This was done but my PC was left with all sorts of problems. Eventually Norton told me they had no more answers and I should contact Microsoft. They wanted some 40 to talk to me, so did not bother. Eventually I had to format the hard disk and reinstall the op. system and all my software. Took 2 days.
Norton promised to extend my subcription for all my trouble. I asked for a refund as I had had to do all the work myself to get my PC working.
Guess what. They ignore all e mails, even one's to named persons.
They then had the cheek to send me a customer satisfaction questionaire.
I went through everything again, no reply.
Once they have your money, they are not interested at all. I have used Norton for many years, but this is the end. I would not use Norton at any price. Stay clear.

Update!!!!!
Emailed Symantec CEO at group headquaters with all my problems. Got a call from Symantec in less than 24 hours, AND a full refund AND 12 months free Internet Security.
If you have a problem with Symantec, keep at them.
