2 out of 5 stars Destination Dullsville...   August 8, 2005

Unlike a real train set, the novelty wears off with this package after about an hour. It's such a good idea, yet the execution is so dull. The 3D rendering is fantastic, but that's basically all the game really offers. There's a lot of fiddling about to choose a particular location, then the engine and carriages - and after that you either stop or go, round and round a track. It looks lovely, but lacks any edge. Even when you come off the rails at 198kph, it all happens very slowly and totally unrealistically, so it becomes hard to care.

It simply isn't engrossing enough because it doesn't offer enough control. You can design your own railway in its own scenery - in theory at least - but the tool to do is so complex as to be practically useless. But as a driver, you simply don't feel that you are "there"; it's too insulated, too sanitised, too safe, for you to get emotionally involved. And the trains on offer seem to have been chosen for their extraordinary dullness except for the BR 125 engine.

Ultimately, this kind of thing will get more realistic and exciting as time goes on, but at the moment - despite looking good and rendering well - this game is a one way ticket to boredom. It's the software equivalent of a Britsh rail sandwich - dry, unfilling and curling up at the edges.

Having read this months "Computer Active" magazine and seen the review on this product of 4 stars out of 5. I purchased it and have not been disappointed! This is a good train simulator with a wide range of landscape, weather, and international settings.
Well worth the money!
