Amazon.co.uk Review While businesses are reluctant to upgrade a PC, gamers will swap a kidney for a five percent performance gain. Games drive PC development. On the hardware side this led to MMX and 3D graphics cards. Software developments include DirectX and rafts of APIs (application programming interfaces). Progress continues apace. With change the only constant, Loyd Case is brave to attempt a gamers' PC guide.Still, he lucidly explains motherboard front side and back side bus speeds; chipsets; memory types, speed and access as well as processor performance and more--as they relate to gaming. He covers 3D graphic hardware, frame buffering, v-sync and how running your monitor at a lower refresh rate can speed up game play, shows why a USB mouse provides more accuracy in shooters than a serial mouse (polling rates if you must know) and why you should deep six all ISA cards. He shows how to improve Internet and local network gameplay and discusses games servers, proxies and more. It's a labour of love. Inevitably, some of the information is already out of date--for example, Microsoft has effectively scrapped the Millennium Windows release. Even so, if you want the ultimate in PC game performance, buy this book or die--over and over again. --Steve Patient

The Ultimate PC Hardware Guide June 2, 2003 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I can't praise this tome enough. Having picked it up in an unassuming bookstore/coffee shop whilst on holiday in Canada a couple of years ago, the information is by no means cutting edge, but 90% of the content is still relevant. Not only does this book tell you almost everything you need to know about upgrading, building or repairing your PC, it does so in an easy-to-read fashion, explaining everything so that even beginners can come away experts! Photographs and information tables break up the text, interspersed with humour and little side-notes to warn you of potential pitfalls. There is a chapter dedicated to every aspect of a modern computer, including several chapters decicated to making the most out of your existing set-up through tune-ups and little windows tricks. And last but not least, for those of you that have never done it, a step-by-step guide to building a PC from scratch. A must for novices, an excellent reference guide for experts, and although some more research is recommended to keep up to date with the latest developments in hardware, this book comes highly recommended. Where's the sequel?
