5 out of 5 stars Sniper One Review   August 19, 2008
Sniper One: The Blistering True Story of a British Battle Group Under Siege

I have literally just finished this book 10 minutes ago - i am a person that does not usually enjoy reading, i am a person that enjoys films and games. But i decided to buy this book, and what a fantastic decision that was.

This true story is exemplary, i am almost lost for words to describe this book, It is a supremely perfect balance of all out war, mixed in with feelings, emotions, descriptions. It all ties in perfectly, there is not a boring sentence in this book. By the end of the book, you can't help but sit there and be so incredibly proud to be British and have such fantastic troops fighting for your country, it is impossible to not respect what these lads went through - it is truly awe-inspiring, how they had the nerve to handle such situations with such authority and care for others is beyond belief.

Sgt Dan Mills has created the best book that can possibley exist, it cannot and will not ever be bettered by another book, game nor film. His description of his 6 months fighting in Al Amarah is impossible to improve. It even left me feeling emotional, i just could not express and beleive what they had been through and how they came out so well from it all - the Epilogue to describe what happened to them all after made it even better - it highlighted the fact that these are real men, that really did this.

And for that fact, Sgt Dan Mills, Sniper Platoon - The princess of wales regiment and Y company have my utter most respect.

You owe it to these formidable soldiers to read this book - for everything they have been through it is not much to do, just to show your appreciation.

Please read this book - It is superbly awe sinspiringly brilliant. I could never write into words what this book has done for me and how it has even changed my outlook on the British army, and even my own life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent work & a first rate book   August 18, 2008
I recently read this book whilst on holiday & I couldn't believe how quickly I was diving through the pages, Sgt Mills immerses you in the action straight away and his straight talking style is to be commended.

I know that war and killing isn't very PC but this is the very job that the politicians and by definition the British public put our armed forces out there to do, Peace Keeping as the book suggests is an interesting idea but during that time period (quite likely still now) in Iraq it seems truly naive.

To the reviewer who only gave 2 stars and questioned the gun ho nature of the book and how awful it is to glorify killing, I truly think you've missed the point. I believe it's fair to say that every soldier or indeed person who trains for something to the degree that our armed forces train wish to use the skills they possess and on this occasion that happens to be winning wars, to bemoan a person for taking pride in their work is in my opinion very back to front thinking and I'm glad you're not out on our front lines.

I think it also fair to say that Sgt Mills demonstrates that force was only used as a means of defence under strict rules of engagement designed to win 'hearts and minds' and this was only changed at a higher level once it was understood that the PWRR was at war with the insurgents in Al Amarah.

Overall this has to be one of the best books I've ever read & I feel fortunate to have found it on the shelves.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Read   August 18, 2008
A raw but engaging account of one truely brave group of men.

If you enjoy this book, then i also very highly recommend Eight Lives Down by Major Chris Hunter.

5 out of 5 stars What a great read.   August 5, 2008
I was luckie enough to be bought this book by my wife as a Birthday pressie, Its full throttle from start to finish, a true account of British troop's cought up in the 2004 power struggle in Iraq.

Sent in as peace keepers, they soon turn to there training and human survival instincts to keep fighting when all looks bleak. There are other books out about this time in Iraq but none as good as "Sniper One".

It you only buy a few books a year, make sure this is top of your list.

5 out of 5 stars Best book ever read!   August 3, 2008
The best book I've ever read. A great account of what our boys have been doing in Iraq. I couldn't put it down, thanks to Dan and the and boys!!!!
