Acer Aspire 1 Problem with MP3 files October 3, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I recently bought one of these to use to play music for my dance class. Unfortunately it kept stopping half way through an Mp3 file on a very random basis. Shop says it looks like a software fault . It was running on Linux Lite. I have now upgraded to an Advent netbook running on Windows Xp and I have had no problems. Hope you don't have the same problem
What a great notebook. September 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought the blue aspire with the 8gb SSD for my GF as an addition to a normal laptop.
I am so impressed with it. The screen is superb, the thing is so light and the keyboard great to type on even with my man-sized hands.
Apart from these obvious features, the best thing about this is the operating system.
I'm a professional UNIX SA working with Sun Solaris and RHEL, and I bought an asus701 a few months back with the xandros o/s on it. Well this Linpus o/s is sooooo much better. It is cleaner, faster and the included apps work far better.
Most people say the thing wrong with Linux is that in comparison to MSWindows, Linux does not work as well for multimedia applications, but this OS is better. Not just a little better, but way better than Windows or the xandros version on the asus, it's even easier and cleaner to use than Ubuntu!
If you want something fast, quiet, light, with a superb OS then don't even think about it, get the Acer Aspire one, but get the SSD version as the battery lasts longer and it is faster too.
The only things and yes there are 2 things I don't like, are:
1. There is no sleeve/case supplied with the machine, which is just ridiculous.
2. The power supply is the same size as a standard laptop, which means there is more to lug about with you, whereas the asus has the lovely little plug sized one.
Apart from those two points, this is by far the best "netbook" on the market.
Some Essembaly Required September 15, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The hardware is awesome, but I believe Limpus (the OS based on Fedora 8) is broken out of the box. Asus have done some modifications to a few dependencies which mean that you can not update the software (with the exseption of upgradeing to FireFox3) or the OS. However after a few days of playing around with it I managed to get Ubuntu working just fine and now I have an awesome Ubuntu powered Netbook that I can use for whatever I want, wherever I want and it all fits into my normal (not made for laptop) backpack with room to spare.
The device weighs just 975g, it is very almost silent, 3D performance is surprisingly good, the Atom processor supports Hyper Threading so any errant applications can be sorted without having to restart the machine, wifi is good and with the solid state drive you can install software on it while bungie jumping (or skydiving) because there are no moving parts. The keyboard is comfortable with a traditional arrow laybout and the all important double high enter key.

Brilliant little netbook, I've had no troubles with it at all but for those users who needed to restore it, you don't have to buy a external DVD drive just create a restore memory stick from the restore DVD on another PC or Laptop. Full instructions are on the aspire website.
Fast and Cheap, Oh yes it is. September 5, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a really great product and so cheap, for less money than a ipod touch you have a fully featured laptop, including wifi and a webcam but even better than that if you stick with the cheapest Linux flash memory versions, it really flies, 15 second boot time beat that Windows. Great resolution when using the iplayer or other flash players. Ive had no issues with Wifi or the update process that effected the early shipments. Just bear in mind you can't install iTunes on Linux and the XP version is as expensive as a full size laptop and probably much slower. PS Its only 200 in PC World, come on Amazon keep up.
