Stunning product, but no cigar. September 16, 2008 I had high expectations of this keyboard and stand, having recently purchased the VX Nano mouse. I thought that Logitech could do no wrong.
The packaging it comes in is first class and when you get to see it for the first time out of the box you get a real wow factor, it really looks the part.
Set-up is straightforward, although the mains lead does not sit tightly in the stand, and had fallen out a few times. I am using it with a 17" laptop and it raised the screen height up to a very comfortable level.
Resting the keyboard flat on the desk, the 4 rubber feet keep it firmly in place. Raise the stand at the back of the keyboard and the same cannot be said. Applying any pressure to the front of the keyboard has it sliding away from you. Easily solved by the addition of some blu-tack to the stand, but a bit of a flaw.
The keyboard takes a little getting used to, but once you are used to it, every other keyboard feels poor in comparison.
My only other area of concern is the front wrist rest area of the keyboard. To the left and right are two exceptionally powerful magnets - and I mean powerful ! If you live in the dark ages and still use floppy disks, don't get them near this keyboard. Also I am concerned what they might do to the inner workings of my watch, so I don't wear one while using this keyboard. It may be harmless, but a Jeweller once told me that watches and magnets simply don't get on !
To sum up, this is a great looking piece of kit, and great to use. I won't ever go back to using a cheap tacky keyboard - But fix it to the desk and keep anything you don't want magnetised away.
Excellent piece of kit June 2, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Does the job of raising the laptop screen really well, although the height/angle is fixed in one position (which should suit most needs). The wireless keyboard adds flexibilty, is well built and is comfortable to use. The extra USB ports are a real bonus. The whole thing folds down and clamps together magnetically and would be easy to store when not in use, or would be portable enough if on the move. The extra USB ports and keyboard rely on the power cable being plugged in, which could be a slight problem at times.
There are multimedia keys on the keyboard but these are combined with the function keys and need to be pressed in conjunction with the FN button.
If this product were to include a wireless mouse, it would make it exceptional. As it is, the extra USB ports mean plugging in a wired mouse or wireless mouse is not really a problem for most.
The front part of the Alto does block some buttons and the card slot on my laptop (Sony VAIO VGN series), which is not a problem for me, but could be for some.
I would recommend this product quite highly.
Nice while it worked May 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The desktop stand and keyboard themselves are nothing but 5-star: I noticed an instant difference in my posture as I worked, and when watching movies etc on my laptop, I found it much more comfortable to lean back and have the screen at face height instead of staring down at it. I basically recommend this to everyone who uses their laptop a lot. (One note though: If you mostly use your laptop while travelling, this isn't a very portable solution - it is, after all, a full-size keyboard plus the stand itself. You would also need more space than what, say, an average train table offers.)
Two downsides with this product, one general and one that, hopefully, hasn't affected anyone else:
The power cord is, give or take, about a third of what the power cord for my laptop is. If you don't have an outlet VERY near your desk, you might end up with a cord stretched between the desk and the outlet (in my case that means a permanent stumbling hazard right in front of the door).
Also, the power cord does not sit very tightly in the stand; I suspect that my frequent connection issues is because of the stretch of the cord, putting a little bit of weight on it.
The connection issues, though, have become increasingly worse over the months since I purchased this, and by now it doesn't work at all. As Amazon's 30 days are up, I'm leaning on Logitech's warranty, and hopefully I'll be back to my comfortable workspace in no time.
