Good buy overall August 25, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This laptop has the absolute basics required to run adequately. Some of it's bad points are: 1) the touchpad mouse sometimes has a mind of its own and 2) the build quality isn't great, making the laptop look less sophisticated, 3) the laptop does not come with 80 GB of FREE memory, it's actually less than that as ACER programs are taking up about 10-20 GB.
However, the pros far outweigh the cons. It has the 2 GB of RAM required for Vista to run comfortably, and the available memory is more than enough (unless you are a serious downloader). To gain a little more memory and speed, just uninstall the useless software on the laptop. For the price, this laptop is a bargain, especially for students and the average homeuser.
Fantastic value for money August 24, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was looking for a cheap but reasonable laptop that i could install Linux on. Being a regular Amazon shopper i came across this and was instantly impressed with what you got for the price. The dual core Pentium processor is in fact a re badged Core 2 chip, so is far from a slouch! Lots of memory and a reasonable sized Hard drive. I wasn't looking for a gaming laptop so was happy with the integrated Intel Graphics. Having completely removed Vista, i then installed Ubuntu Linux which was very straight forward. Everything except my Wireless network card worked but after a quick look around the internet i found a guide and driver which I used to get that working. Overall this laptop was never going to win a performance crown, nor a beauty pageant. But you cant fault what you are getting for your money.
horrible piece of tat August 20, 2008 4 out of 11 found this review helpful
this laptop didn't work. the screen kept going black and it also didn't realise that it was attached to a modem, meaning i couldn't go online. in many ways it put me in mind of a chocolate teapot.
guess what, i sent it back and bought a MACBOOK.
i will say this though, amazon are fantastic with returns - they sent a courier to pick it up from my house, making this the most effortless return i've ever made.

My mum needed a new PC so she trusted me to buy this laptop on her behalf. I chose it mainly because it has Vista Premium (rather than Vista Basic) and comes with 2 Gb of RAM installed, which seems to be the minimum according to advice I have been given. The monitor is a standard 15.4" widescreen but is clear and bright. The pre-loaded software includes a DVD editing suite so you don't need to pay for something else. The hard disk is a conservative 80 Gb but that should be fine for most standard users. Overall it suits my mum's requirements very well indeed and I am really impressed with it too.
Early days but so far a good buy. July 29, 2008 78 out of 78 found this review helpful
I bought this laptop as a back up device which means I was not looking for a hi spec machine. That said, for the price this laptop's spec is 'up there' with much more expensive machines in terms of memory and processor. However don't buy this laptop if you want to play graphics intensive games or plug lots of things into it because it only has the bog standard integrated graphics from intel installed and a minimum amount of USB ports. It does however have 2 gb of memory which is, in my opinion, the minimum amount of memory needed to run vista comfortably.
It also has a duel core intel processor, which is amazing really considering the price. So far it has not struggled with anything I have thrown at it. Internet browsing, word processing, online tv ( bbc Iplayer) and dvd viewing are all processed quite comfortably without any noticable lag (and that's WITH the Norton internet security 90 day trial software running)
My only minor niggling complaints are firstly with the plasticy looking case, but that's a personal taste issue, and secondly with the battery, which is good for about two hours if all you do is surf but will drop rapidly if you watch a dvd or run a few programs. But then again, you have the option of using the supplied power lead so not a major problem ( I am not a business user who needs reliable battery power on the move)
Downloaders may be put off by the 80 gb hard drive, which incidentally is split into two partitions, one for Windows and one for Acer, so no full 80 gb available ( 35 and 35 if I remember correctly) but if you're not a downloader 80 gb ( split or not) is fine.
Also there is no integrated webcam. But then again webcams are naughty so this may well be a plus point to some of you! On the other hand go buy a webcam if that's your thing because this laptop won't struggle with one. It does have a built in microphone though.
Comes with 90 day trial of Norton internet security and a 60 day microsoft office trial ( home and student edition) with option to upgrade. Also comes with microsoft works for free. However it does not come with a restore cd. You have to burn your own back up of the factory default image onto DVD to create your own restore cd with the ACER back up software. This is much easier than it sounds, so again not a BIG issue.
In summary, this laptop should be considered by those looking for a compromise between price and performance. It's build quality is acceptable, it doesn't run too hot, performance is adequate for general use ( perfect for students) and in comparison to laptops that are one or two hundred pounds more expensive the only difference seems to be a bigger hard drive on offer and a built in webcam.
Final analysis : A decent budget laptop for the first time buyer or the cash strapped student but don't mistreat it. It is not a lenovo ( IBM) business laptop that you can bounce across boardroom tables!
