5 out of 5 stars Best PS3 Game yet!!!!   August 28, 2008
First off let me start by saying that I dint particularly like the other games in the metal gear solid Franchise for me they were ratehr boring to be quite frank although the cutscenes were amazing and I only bought MGS4 because of the great reviews so I'm not a die hard MGS fan or anything.... or at least I wasnt before I bought this game.
This Game is without the best PS3 game currentky out and possibly the best videogame made, the game play is incredibly varied, the graphics are amazing and the storyline whilst convoluted it beautifully. Yes, the installation times are rather long and yes the cut scenes can be very, very long but instead of detracting from the experince this adds to it as the cutscenes are riveting and although I won't say anymore during the installtion you won't exactly be bored..... The best thing for me about this game is it's abilities to move from tears to joy or through any of the emotions in a matter of moments it is without a doubt an incredibly powerfull experince and I would say that anyone who owns a ps3 MUST get this game.

5 out of 5 stars Not so much a game as an experience   August 27, 2008
The most important thing any potential purchaser of MGS4 has to realise is that you don't so much play it as experience it, it's not so much a game as an event.

Sounds ridiculous I know, but if I want to have an hour of distracting, diverting, relatively shallow fun I'll stick on Call of Duty 4 and grab a shotgun or sniper rifle. MGS4 on the other hand positively demands a dark empty room in the wee small hours and a nicely chilled glass of vodka (or whatever). Love the gameplay parts, settle in and immerse yourself in the cutscene parts and enjoy it for what it is.

There's no doubt anyone wanting a wham bam thank you mam experience from a game would be better off elsewhere. There's certainly no instant gratification on offer here, you're going to have to buy this game chocolates, flowers, take it out for dinner and quite possibly repeat the process for some time before you get what you came for, but that just makes it all the more worthwhile in the end.

Part game, part movie, part weird Japanese madness - for me this equates to the single most exciting and memorable next gen gaming experience so far, and it will take a whole lot of effort to surpass.

3 out of 5 stars Infuriating   August 27, 2008
I'm quite some way through the game now and I'm finding the cut scenes are getting ridiculous. I thought they were long at the start of the game but little was I to know how silly things would get later on. I've not timed it yet but I'm guessing sometimes I can finish a section and then be sat watching for 20-30mins?
Many games have cut scenes but they don't lose sight of the fact that they are a game - with MGS4, for me it does. It's a shame since the game sections are excellent. I've actually given up on watching the cut-scenes now and am skipping instead. I'll read what it was all about when I'm finished.
Did something get lost in translation? What were they thinking when they called characters 'Big Momma' or 'Big Boss' - it just made me laugh when you have these cyber actors trying to be all serious then they come out with 'We must find Big Momma', Eddie Murphy springs to mind.
Can someone explain the purpose of the iPod in the game? They made a bit of a fuss about it when I watched the extra's but now that I'm playing it I feel no urge to pull over and put the virtual iPod on - I'm playing a game! If I wanna listen to music I'll do so.

5 out of 5 stars Snake sneaks into first   August 25, 2008
MGS 4 is easily the best MGS in the series so if your into them then this is an absolute must buy, and if your not well this game is still for you, the story mode is a little slow at the beginning however as the game progresses this improves vastly with more action and more impact.

Be warned though this is not really a pick up and play game you must put at least 45 minutes aside to play this game otherwise you might find yourself stuck for time in the middle of one of the many cutscenes.

And now i must discuss Metal Gear Online, the online game supplied with MGS4,which quite frankly in my opinion is the best I've ever played on my PS3 the only bad thing about it is that you find it hard to stop playing it. I've played COD4 online but it's not in the same league as MGO its really that good, especially the "team sneaking" mode which is ingenious.

So Overall i gave this game a well deserved 5 star rating because of the decent story mode but mainly because of the incredible online play.

2 out of 5 stars Soooooooo disappointing!   August 23, 2008

I just don't get it! Am I playing the same game as those who gave this 5 stars?! If you remove all the cut-scenes (which are cinematic and often entertaining but ... God give me strength! the frequency, slowness and relentless length of them!) you'd end up with just very MEDIOCRE game play. It feels like the gaming engine is struggling to deliver a tactile control experience. But Uncharted-Drake's Progress's graphics are the equal (possibly superior) to this, and that game is incredibly fast and responsive.

Let's be clear, this is not so much a game as a long form animation with some old style 2nd rate corridor gaming thrown in. Terrible sluggish controls, and bog-standard unimaginative shoot-em-ups. All the cool stuff happens in the cut-scenes BUT YOU DON'T GET TO TAKE PART!!! ARRRGH!!!!!

And why can't Snake behave in the (admittedly stunning) environments like a human could? So often he is unable to climb an obstacle that would present no problem to a child. Mercenaries set the benchmark for real world physics (you can roam a whole country, and wherever a human could go you can go) and that's a PS2 game!

The creator of this wants to be a movie director (he's setting out his stall for Hollywood with this), but what makes a good script for a game (and this veers from really rather good to silly) would make a terrible B-movie.

Do yourself a massive favour and go buy the utterly brilliant Uncharted or wait for Mercenaries 2 (which if it is anything like 1 will be a real treat!).
