Excellent book for anyone involved with developing web sites March 12, 2001 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
A very good book explaining what not do when designing your site. Goes through layout of the homepage, search forms, navigation and lots more. Easy to read, no jargon or anything. The last two chapters are dedicated to usability testing, step by step on how to go about it. This will be a book I will reference on every project I work on.
Fantastic! A must-read for every web professional. February 15, 2001 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Usability is a very simple, very complex subject that's clouded in argument and emotion. It is also the most important issue facing the development of the web.It needs to be made accessible to the millions of practitioners trying to work out how to do good stuff. "Don't Make Me Think" simply gets it absolutely right. I cannot recommend the book enough. It is simply written and deliciously presented, research evidence is relevant, succinct and interesting. It's a joy : )b
An I.T. book that you'll read from cover to cover! January 4, 2001 This book is a real rarity amongst the breed of I.T. books - it's short!!! Whilst other authors seem to vie with each other to produce longer and longer tomes (that will probably be dipped into and then gather dust on bookshelves), Krug has broken the mould and produced a very readable book. The book has obviously been written and put together with a great deal of care - so refreshing compared to the cavalier approach of many I.T.authors, whose books are full of typos and incorrect internal references. The text is taut and (genuinely) humourous and is illustrated in colour throughout. Credit should also go to Mark Matcho for the illustrations and cartoons. The book keeps you firmly in the user's shoes. It is entirely non-technical, which, whilst this may disappoint the web developer looking for tips for creating the latest sexy interface effect, means that the book will appeal to a wide range of readers. Also the avoidance of current fads and fashions and the focus on timeless design principles means that the book will continue to be relevent for many years to come. This book should be read by everyone who wants the web to be a useable and useful place. As the dust settles after the rush of hormones of the web's adolescence, you will be seeing the principles that Krug espouses in the grown-up sites of the web of the future.
A very good introduction December 9, 2000 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Even as a usability professional in Web design since 5 years, I enjoyed reading this book. Maybe there is nothing really new to those in my profession in it, but I don't think we're Krug's intended audience. It's easy to read, clearly illustrated and an excellent introduction, with lots of hands-on examples. This is the book I'm going to plague some of my "Flash-trigger happy" graphic designer friends with this Christmas!
Don't just read it, learn it by heart November 22, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the kind of book you can't put down, full of striking images that stick in your mind. Steve Krugg gives advice that feels like common sense, but that draws on years of experience and expertise. He steers clear of ideology. There are hardly any of those boring Do and Don't checklists. The shortness of the book is obviously the result of a lot of work. In other books on this sort of subject, I often feel they would be useful to write a boiled-down version for my everyday design. Here Steve Krugg has done the boiling down for us.
