I thought it was just me! September 29, 2008 I've just been reading the other reviews about This Charming Man & feel comforted as I've been battling on with the book out of sheer loyalty to Marian Keyes and was beginning to feel like my attention span or imagination must be deteriorating as I get older! Well at least I know I'm not the only one who is very disappointed by the book - the story & the characters are not even a stratch on her previous books and I'm praying that the next one will be a hell of a lot better!
This Charming Man September 25, 2008 Like many other reviewers I usually read Marian Keye's books within a couple of days they are so gripping.
However, with This Charming Man it took me about 4 weeks to get 3/4 of the way through and then I just kind of gave up. It was such a disappointment.
I really didn't like the way the book was split into 4 stories as it made it far too messy and it didn't give enough time to get to know, let alone become attached, to any of the characters. Keyes' books are usually heavily reliant on her fabulous charatcer depiction and the empathy you feel for her heroines. Usually you almost feel inside their heads and fall totally for the men involved. But in this case there just wasn't the opportunity to get to know them well enough and what you did hear of them wasn't particularly enchanting, particularly with Lola's awful pidgin english.
I particularly didn't like the story about Marnie. Though it was true to life, the picture painted of her charcater wasn't a very likable one, which contrasts greatly with the one of Rachel in Rachel's Holiday.
I guess we'll just have to wait another 2 years for a better offering...what a shame.
Loved this! September 16, 2008 I'm a huge Marian Keyes fan and agree that this is a departure from her usual frothy style. But I loved the gritty subject matter and her refusal to shy away from tough issues. Let's face it, her previous books have also dealt with death, adultery and violence so this shouldn't be such a shock to the diehard froth fans. It's great to see a writer take a risk and extend her style instead of rehashing the same stuff (are you listening, Maeve Binchy?!). Really enjoyed this.
Not just me then? September 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was sooooo excited when I found the latest of Marian Keyes books was out. Unfortunately, I am really, really disappointed with the book. I find it really hard work, but maybe that is just with the effort of having to read the incredibly annoying 'Lola' chapters. In fact, that was the reason I logged on to Amazon to read the reviews - I just wanted to know that it isn't only me who finds the Lola style of writing so annoying and think that this book is not a patch on the rest of her novels. I'm at page 266, wondering whether to continue or not......... Marian's earlier books are some of the best I've ever read again and again - gutted that this one won't be held in the same regard!
I am usually a Marian Keyes fan, but very disappointed... September 14, 2008 I found this book incredibly difficult to read - the individual stories within the book are just too fragmented, I kept losing track of who was who and I generally just found it boring! Like some other users - I found Lola's style of writing so irritating I resorted to skim-reading. Pick any of her other books...just don't waste your money on this one!
