Really good book! June 20, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love Marian Keyes, she is one of my favourite authors. Rachel's holiday is one of my favourite books of all time. THIS book took a bit of time to draw me in, but when it did I couldn't put it down. I've read the other reviews and some of them stated that Lola's style of writing put them right off...it did the total opposite for me, it really made the book! The only way I can describe it is that it's a bit like Bridget Jones's Diary in that she shortens sentences and doesn't often use words she should, like "me" or "a". Once you read the book you'll understand what I mean. It's very much like Rachel's Holiday in that Marian deals with some very real and down to earth subjects. The only down point for me was the political side...I found it hard to take in, but it really didn't spoil the overall enjoyment of the book. Can't wait for the next one and hopefully it'll be Helen Walsh's story...Mammy Walsh has to be the best character ever!
Best book so far! June 18, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this book for my holiday and I thoroughly enjoyed it - it was very emotional and I couldn't put it down. I thought the character Lola was hilarious but it didn't detract from the sensitive nature of the plot. Thank you Marian!
As ever Marian is amazing June 17, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have read every single one of her books and think Marian Keyes really is one of the best authors there is. I know from first glance people think they are basic chick lit, but the reality is she deals with many very serious issues. This Charming Man is a perfect example of this. A few other reviewers have had a problem with the style of how Lola's parts were written, but I completely disagree. I adored the style of these bits, in fact the varying styles of the different women's voices was excellent. I don't want to give anything away of the storyline, so I'll just say BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT! You will not be disappointed.
ok, just ok! June 17, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
One of my hobbies in my life is to collect all the books from my Irsih authors, marian keyes, cathy kelly, patricia scanlan, shiela o"flanagan, melissa hill, erin kaye.... and the best part of my hobbie is to reread this books all the time because I love these storys. This new book however is one that I don't think I would ever reread again. It was hard going the first time and the writing of Lola made me almost put this book down. Not even in the same class as her old books. Sorry Marian, still love you though!
Top Marks for Lola!! June 17, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am a Marian devotee. This book was much expected, but would say it is - to me- not its best. I mean, it could be, if she hadn't written Rachel before. The recurring topic of addiction is a little bit too gloomy , especially if one does not relate to it; it grows somewhat tiring. This was the only ''flaw'' I found ( together with the cross-dressing, which I found slightly exaggerated- probably because I haven't come across it). Otherwise, unlike most of the ''dislikers'' commenting negatively Lola, I was a great fan of both the character and the narration. It sent me frantically turning the pages to find next Lola and really made me think in the same way vis a vis my own every day life and cheer up, even in difficult circumstances . I think the narration and the way Lola is put to approach things is one demonstration of Marian's genius and capacity to break new ground. I also loved the way domestic violence is treated and, in general,I greatly appreciate that Marian is not doing just plain chic-lit (or rather no chic lit at all). She engages in tackling sensitive social problems and she does it efficiently.
