A joy December 8, 2007 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
Superb storyteller. Subject matter isn't happy so don't expect an uplifting tale. Bloody, bloody good though, drwas you in and brings tears to your eyes.
Moving and inspiring November 30, 2007 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
Moving, beautifully written and an absolute page-turner. Khalid Hosseini has followed The Kite Runner with an absolutely breathtaking novel. Learning throughout this story of the reality of hardships being endured in Afghanistan, serves as a reminder for what we should be grateful for, and should never take for granted.
Quite simply stunning November 28, 2007 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
I was lucky enough to visit Afghanistan in the 1970s, and that perhaps made the book all the more personally moving, but it would be a stunning read for anyone with an interest in the daily lives and experiences of oppressed people there, or indeed anywhere in the world. The horror that shrieks from the pages is profound, and yet Khaled Hosseini manages to convey the indomitability of the human spirit: the way life, and the small things, carry on in spite of tyranny. It's better than The Kite Runner, in my opinion. A 'must read'.
A thousand splendid hours of good reading. November 23, 2007 17 out of 25 found this review helpful
Well, maybe not that many, but a lot. Comparisons have been made to the writer Khaled Hosseini, saying he's the Jackson MCrae of cross culture. I don't know that I agree with that, but A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is a book that would have put Hosseini on the map regardless of his success with KITE RUNNER.
As many have gone over before here, it is the story of friendship, hardship, race, religion, and global politics, all put together in a fascinating way.
This is not al light read, and for that I would recommend the books INVISIBLE MONSTERS by Palahniuk (TOTALLY different) and a welcomed departure, and the book DON'T STOP ME NOW which is also on the bestseller list.
Outstanding! November 19, 2007 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
If you do one thing this week, then buy and read this book.
I have just finished reading it and would rate it in my top ten of all time favourite reads.
It is funny, sad, emotional, tragic, hard hitting and beautiful.
