Suns of Kite? June 19, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I picked up this book and its companion, Kite Runner, quite randomly when I was looking for material to sustain long train journeys - I could not have been better served. Hosseini's writing is concise, whilst at the same time conveying a rich detail of the scenes portrayed. Some reviews complain about the indistinguishable characters of Laila and Mariam, but I dont agree - the whole point is that they start out as very different, but gradually merge into a synergistic maternal presence in the household.
I appreciated the restraint used on the violent scenes and overall enjoyed the journey through both novels Suns & Kite Runner. I see no reason why we shouldnt be reading about Hosseini's "dynasty of characters" in future novels - it will be worth the wait - please keep writing!
Excellent! June 19, 2008 An amazing book. Centred around 2 women, who initially loathe each other, the story takes you through the ordeal that some women have to endure. The idea that, for some wives, there is no escape is inconceivable, but is brought to reality in this book. A great book, that leaves you grieving. Would definitely recommend it.
A surprising delight June 18, 2008 I was persuaded to read this book by my grandma as my usual read is a crime or thriller novel, but once I started this book I could not put it down. Although the story is incredibly sad it is a must read for all ages and a real eye-opener into the hardships faced by women in less fortunate situations than ourselves. A truly moving book.

Read this book at your peril, anything you pick up afterwards will not live up to it.
Still good but author getting repetitive June 17, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you haven't read "The Kite Runner" then I would recommend this book. If you have read it then I'd wait a good a good 18 months before tearing into this one. This novel is very similar to its predecessor in many ways. The troublesome history of Afghanistan, the unfaltering spirit of its people and the brutality of the Taliban are common themes. The friendship of two women as opposed to two boys is all that differs. That been said the writing is captivating and you cannot but be tugged along on the emotional roller coaster of the characters and country. I know you should write about what you know about but would like to see Hosseini try something new. Maybe tell us a bit more about the life of an Afghan immigrant in America as hinted at in the end of his first novel.
