4 out of 5 stars A good book to get started with   October 2, 2008
I worked my way through this book as a complete notice and found it quite easy to pick up. Can even be read before going to sleep, it is that easy going. The best part of the book is the actual page quality and feel, they have a way of making quite technical pages seem straight forward.

I recommend this book, and myself bought the css one.

5 out of 5 stars Best introductory HTML book   April 29, 2008

This, in my opinion is the best introductory guide to HTML that I have seen. I have been using HTML for a while, and have in fact taught HTML on an Access to HE course. Even so, there were a number of things that were new to me. As a consequence, I checked all my HTML books, many of them far bigger than this, and found that I could not find these topics. I can only conclude that the book is right up-to-date.

What I like is the clear presentation, and the modern emphasis of doing everything in a style-sheet if at all possible.

Each topic is broken up into simple chunks / steps that last for 1 or 2 pages. There are nice simple examples that involve a few lines of code, a very clear explanation and a screen-dump depicting what you would expect to see on the screen.

I only wish I had this book a number of years ago. I certainly could have put together a better HTML course if I had.

1 out of 5 stars IN EASY STEPS???????????   May 20, 2006

This book is a nightmare for anyone trying to learn html from scratch,. This is the purpose I bought it for, and it is absolutely hopeless. There is no easy steps, and nothing is explained properly. It instantly starts using complicated terms which mean nothing to me - this is fine, but they don't go on to explain them. I don't understand where the steps are, there are none. Waste of money!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.   May 7, 2006

Funny. The first review mentions another book which they found "just thrust code" at them. That's exactly what I'd accuse this one of. It jumps straight in with examples but very lttle explanation of WHY you're doing what it says. Each page covers one topic, eg "adding stylesheets." There's one example of code. And very little else. Why am I suddenly using { } brackets on page 27 with not a clue what they signify?
The 7th example uses Javascript! DO you really think someone buying a basic "learn HTML" book should be thrown Javascript code at that stage? It hasn't even told us what a script is!
I can see how you could use this book to build a VERY basic site, but you don't actually learn any skills or knowledge of how and why HTML works, so you'd always have to refer to the book again to change anything on the site.
