1 out of 5 stars may come bundled with virus like software   September 27, 2008

5 stars for the WD drive itself. But, 1 star overall because mine came bundled with a virus like program called 'memeo' which does not let you uninstall it, no matter what you try to do. It takes up a considerable amount of the available memory on the drive. Beware.

1 out of 5 stars Unreliable, untrustworthy with valuable data   September 26, 2008

It may well just have been my particular hard disc that was at fault but mine failed pretty much out of the box. I bought it intending to use it with my Mac (which is entirely up to date with OSX 10.5.5) as a backup using Time Machine but less than 2GB into the backup it powered itself down. It then proceeded to randomly switch itself on and off until I disconnected the power. The second and third attempts to use it with Time Machine gave the same result. Some compatibility problem with Time Machine seemed likely but after deselecting it as a Time Machine drive and just copying files to it, it did exactly the same thing again. As a result I'm sending mine back for a refund.

Like I say, it may well just have been my bad luck that I got a faulty drive but I've never in twelve years of owning and using hundreds of hard discs ever seen one fail that fast or in that manner.

4 out of 5 stars Noisier than my computer ...   September 24, 2008

While this drive is a little noisy at times, the fact it can be placed hidden behind my computer lets it off somewhat.

I'm using this drive with an iMac as a Time Machine backup drive. While WD do sell specific Mac drives, there's no reason why this can't be used. The drive actually comes with backup software on it designed for PCs, but on plugging it into my Mac (without needing to install the driver) it simply overruled that and started backing up. Supremely easy to use, looks good, and a decent size. Just don't expect it to be silent.

1 out of 5 stars Junk   September 19, 2008

Unpacked the item earlier today, plugged it into the computer. Computer doesn't recognise the hard drive (which, by the way, is making a few clicking noises). Plug it into my laptop, and guess what? Laptop doesn't recognise the hard drive. Item is going straight back to Amazon for a refund. Be very very careful!!

5 out of 5 stars Attractive and Robust   September 13, 2008

It takes only one attack of data loss to learn the importance of a good backup: and a backup is only as good as the other backup... and the one that you've got in the office, too. That's why I now own five MyBook drives, including two of these 500GB drives, and I've been very happy with each of them. They are both attractive and reliable, as well as being quiet and unobtrusive.

I use a Mac so can't comment on the quality of the software (perhaps you'll use TimeMachine or SuperDuper instead), but have been very happy with all of these drives. Recommended.
