5 out of 5 stars Sonic Screwdriver - A 9 year olds opinion   May 29, 2006
33 out of 39 found this review helpful

I'm a 9 year old girl and I like doctor who. I have purchased a sonic screwdriver, I have had it for a day and a bit of it has fallen off however it is really fun. It makes two realistic sounds. It comes with a spare nib. I am sure any 8, 9 or 10 girl or boy who likes doctor who would love to own one, adults might like it to.

I used it while I watched Doctor Who and zapped it when the doctor did!

So I totally recommend it just don't drop it because it won't last.

4 out of 5 stars Kitsch fun for the adult fan!   May 27, 2006

I've no idea what those negative reviewers are talking about! This is in no way ideal as a child's toy but to an adult collector and Doctor Who enthusiast this is a wonderful prop/display piece. The UV light is VERY bright and the 2 sounds are distinct from each other (listen to it carefully). Ensure that you buy the product with batteries included and at a reasonable price and you will be very happy with your purchase, believe me. My only gripe is that the packaging features C.Eccleston! Not that I didn't think he was a good Doctor but David Tennant is now my favourite alongside Tom Baker.

4 out of 5 stars A bit of light hearted fun   May 18, 2006

Rather good in my humble opinion, I picked one up (came with batteries) and had a good tinker with it. The light is not designed to be ultra bright as previous reviewers have mistakenly assumed, it's primarily UV and makes the writing from the UV pen attachment very bright. There are two sounds but they're not particularly different from each other and they're not very loud either. Probably a bonus if you're sick of listening to annoyingly loud kids toys. Still the sounds are pretty authentic and add to the feel of the toy.

The plastic is quite robust and has a nice feel to it. It doesn't look tacky or feel flimsy. The BBC have actually asked the designers for a few of them to base the new series (David Tennant) screwdrivers on because they're much more durable than the professionally built props. Draw your own conclusions.

As for batteries; a quick bit of research shows that you can get 30+ of them on Ebay for 5 (GBP) inclusive of P&P, so I wouldn't call them expensive though I would think that the screwdrivers that come without them would leave a sour taste in one's mouth.

Personally I think it's quite a bit of fun and it's nice to simply hold and fiddle with. Do bear in mind that generally reviews are made by people who have had bad experiences as the ones who are happy generally just 'get on with it'. I thought I'd add my own experience simply to contrast the other reviews.

5 out of 5 stars I Think It's Exactly What I Wanted   April 19, 2006

Big Doctor Who fan, but not a fanatical completist or anything, just wanted this for fun as a neat little trinket.

If you're expecting your kids to "Play" with this for hours on end, forget it. Unless you're actually encouraging your kids to play with their imagination and not rely on a play-set or action figure to give them every moment's inspiration, then don't bother buying this--it'll just be wasted on them (in other words, unless they enjoy The Doctor's adventures as intelligent, sometimes silly, but overall fun adventuring minus a bunch of slimy aliens or super-villains in capes, then this won't be worth it).

This is for kids who like to play with the boxes refrigerators come in, or take rope and make themselves into a cowboy using their fingers as gun barrels. That's it.

This is a fun, highly accurate toy (Mine came with batteries and has worked fine, no drainage yet and it's been a week of regular "shooting" it around for giggles, don't know what the other complaints are--if you didn't get batteries with it, sounds like you bought it from the wrong source). It doesn't shoot plastic bullets or have kung-fu grip and IT DOESN'T ADVERTISE THAT IT DOES.
I'd get this if you're a geeky folk who enjoy the Doctor and enjoy the idea of having a trinket from the show. That's it.

2 out of 5 stars Dr Who Screwdriver   April 3, 2006

Don't waste your money! I was very disappointed with this product for my son. The 3 button cell batteries are not supplied. My other son bought a non branded UV pen on the high street, it was half the price, included batteries and more than twice as bright with a much larger writing pad. I am surprised the BBC endorse this item. Shame on them.
